Current Status and Opinions of Post Graduate Residents in Gujarat Towards Regenerative Endodontics

Amongst all the recent advances in the field of dental sciences, regenerative therapies have caught the attention of clinicians as well as researchers. Given the advances in regenerative endodontic research, the regeneration of the dental tissues will not be a far future. This field of research applies the concept of tissue engineering in an attempt to regenerate dental tissues.

Possible future technologies for delivering regenerative endodontic therapy may include scaffold implant, injectable scaffold and gene therapy, root canal revascularization, three dimensional cell printing, pulp implant, postnatal stem cell therapy. The technique of free autogenous gingival grafting (FGG) has undergone little modification since its introduction by Bjorn in Scandinavia in 1963 and by King and Pennel inthe United States in 1964. The technique is widely used to treat a variety of mucogingival problems such as insufficient or lack of attached gingiva, the presence of high frenum attachments, shallow fornix and denuded roots following gingival recession.  FGG can be procured from donor site using scalpels, gingivectomy knife or palatal shaving knife (Paquette knife). The donor site is frequently the palate, although the use of edentulous ridge areas, tuberosity and attached gingiva has also been described. Scalpel is most commonly used and conventional method for procuring gingival auto grafts. Gingivectomy knife, although not commonly used, also works on similar principle. Micro-Implant Anchorage for Orthodontic Treatment of Bialveolar Protrusion

Conventional methods of reinforcing orthodontic anchorage have several disadvantages, including complicated appliance design and the need for exceptional patient cooperation. Kanomi and Costa et al.   introduced the use of titanium microscrews and miniscrews for orthodontic anchorage. Microscrews are small enough to place in any area of the alveolar bone, easy to implant and remove, and inexpensive.    In addition, orthodontic force application can begin almost immediately after implantation. In particular, microscrews have been shown to produce en masse retraction of the six anterior teeth. So it was decided to use micro-implants to treat a patient having Class 1 bialveolar protrusion where anchorage demands are critical. The patient, a 15-year-old female, had a convex profile and a Class I skeletal pattern with bialveolar protrusion Cephalometric analysis showed an ANB angle of 4°, a mandibular plane angle (FMA) of 20° and facial angle of 88°.
