Plaque removal is the key to reducing the incidence of gingivitis, and the appropriate use of either a manual or an electric toothbrush is vital in achieving this goal. Electric toothbrushes have been shown in some cases to be more effective in removing plaque than manual brushes. The rationale behind the electric toothbrush is that it substitutes the hand coordination required with a manual toothbrush; with the electric toothbrush’s own cleansing mechanism.
